Dodge PCM Features and Advantages
Dodge PCM is a power-train control module; abbreviated PCM. It is brain of the car which controls everything that the engine does. It is basically a control unit, used on a wide range of motor vehicles both heavy and light. PCM in most cases is a total control unit, comprising engine control unit (ECU) and the transmission control unit (TCU). It controls nearly everything, viz. idle speed, fuel delivery, valve timing in engines with Variable Valve Timing, emissions functions, ignition timing, turbo boost pressure in turbocharged engines, throttle position and cruise control.
Dodge PCM is a hardware which also controls the automatic transmission in cars that do not use an independent Transmission Control Module. Dodge PCM also performs the function of communicating with the Body Control Module, ABS/traction control/stability control module, climate control system, electronic steering, all the lighting modules, keyless entry arrangement and other minor systems to share information, data and perform interactive functions. The PCM is plays an active role in many functions that go beyond the engine functioning.
This computer is the brain of the engine control system. When the brain of car i.e. PCM gives up its functioning owing to poor or over use, the engine and everything that the microprocessor controls is also adversely impacted by way of functioning; such as charging system, transmission, emission controls, and communications with other onboard control modules etc. When you take your car to the mechanic and he’s seen and tells you that car’s performance is hit due to PCM turning bad, then the PCM should be replaced.
Having said the above it should be kept in mind that the PCM is an expensive component or hardware, so it should not be replaced casually without diagnosing the unit thoroughly and until there is clear evidence that a problem is with PCM and not another car part. If you have bought your Dodge PCM for reliable dealer and when you take it to him for repair or maintenance he will tell you another very important feature of this hardware, that is, that many drivability and emissions problems can be simply resolved by re-flashing the PCM getting software updated from the vehicle manufacturer.
